For years, raffia occupied a mere quiet corner of the fashion world. Associated more with market baskets, beach bags and Mediterranean holidays than luxury craftsmanship, the natural fibre was often treated as a seasonal accent rather than a material worthy of centre stage. But with its latest Raffia Editions, Polène is challenging that perception. For Summer 2026, the Parisian maison transforms raffia into something altogether more sophisticated: a celebration of craftsmanship, provenance and understated elegance.
At the heart of the story lies Madagascar. It is here that the raffia fibres used throughout the collection are sourced before being transformed using traditional crochet techniques passed down through generations of artisans. The result is a rich interplay of texture and structure, with every stitch contributing to a composition that feels both organic and architectural. Hand-finished seams connect leather and raffia with remarkable precision, creating a seamless dialogue between natural materials and contemporary design.
The collection revisits several of Polène’s most recognisable silhouettes through this artisanal lens. The Cyme and Cyme Mini embrace dense, sculptural weaving that accentuates their distinctive forms, while the Numéro Dix introduces raffia through an intricate rice-stitch crochet technique that reimagines the bag’s signature half-moon flap. Throughout the collection, the brand’s clean, architectural lines remain intact, yet the addition of raffia introduces a softness and warmth that feels inherently tied to summer.
Two new shades debut alongside the collection: Laurel, a muted green reminiscent of sun-drenched foliage, and Ebony, a rich brown inspired by rain-soaked earth. More than seasonal colours, they serve as subtle references to the landscapes from which the collection draws its inspiration, grounding each piece in the environment and craftsmanship of Madagascar.
The Raffia Editions reflect a growing appreciation for materials with a sense of place, pieces that carry with them a story of origin and human craftsmanship. In Polène’s hands, raffia becomes something far more enduring than a seasonal trend. Instead, it becomes a reminder that true luxury is often found not in excess, but in the beauty of a material, the skill of the artisan, and the story woven into a stitch.
