In a nation that knows how to stage grandeur with intention, the SMK Tennis Tournament has evolved into one of Abu Dhabi’s most elegant sporting traditions. Now in its 14th edition, the tournament returns in 2025 with a refined, deeply considered programme that blends sport, culture and community, supported by leading partners including ADCB Private and Abu Dhabi Retail.

Held over fifteen days, the event unites thirty Emirati players across singles and doubles matches. But what sets SMK apart is its unmistakable affinity to quiet luxury that permeates not only the courts, but every touchpoint of the experience. From fragrance workshops with Penhaligon’s to curated dinners, wellness sessions and lifestyle discussions, the fortnight unfolds like a modern majlis shaped by elegance, fellowship and the enduring ambition of Emirati women.

That spirit, Sheikha Shaikha bint Mohammed bin Khalid Al Nahyan explains in an interview with Eyes Arabia, is intentional. “Luxury in the context of sport and community is about intention, care, and meaningful connection,” she shares. “It is the respect given to every individual, and the ability to bring people together in an environment that inspires confidence and joy.” Through collaborations with heritage houses such as Penhaligon’s, David Morris and Lacoste, SMK transcends traditional sporting norms to create a cultural moment, one that feels as elevated as it is grounded in authenticity.

Tennis, meanwhile, becomes both metaphor and medium. “It teaches discipline, resilience, and strategic thinking,” she says. “For Emirati women, these qualities are essential as they continue to lead and innovate.” On these courts, young athletes don’t simply perfect their backhand, they shape their identities, strengthen their leadership and build a sense of unity that reaches far beyond sport.

What truly defines SMK, however, is its lineage. The tournament honours the vision of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Mother of the Nation, whose legacy of empowerment is felt in every edition. “Witnessing young Emirati players step onto the court with confidence and pride is a defining milestone,” Sheikha Shaikha reflects. “Her Highness’s leadership has paved the way for women to excel in sport. That legacy represents our core purpose: empowering women, inspiring new generations, and elevating tennis as a vibrant part of our national identity.”
